Some new age book shops or yoga studios have a really particular smell. Many of this places use a tradition from the Native Americans who used sacred herbs which were burned. Their smoke was believed to be able to purify any room.
It’s like you burn incense. This is called smudging and it’s mostly connected to sage, but there are also many other herbs that you can use and enjoy their benefits.
Why Should We Burn Bay Leaves?
They have been present in many different cultures and their legends for ages: Caribbean, Indian, Roman and Greek. They have been used in their cuisines, but also for burning.
They have also been mentioned in different fairytales, but it is also added in different detergents, soaps, perfumes, lotions and creams.
The leaf is mostly used as an anti-inflammatory, sedative, anticonvulsant and analgesic. The herb is full of anti-fungal and antibacterial properties and helps us decrease the heart rate as well as the blood pressure. It is mostly used against chronic stress, insomnia etc.
Bay leaves are used in the cuisine and they help us to decrease the levels of cholesterol and the blood glucose levels, but also to prevent kidney stones and diabetes. You can take them as tea which prevents the growth of leukemia, but they also stop the apoptosis in cancerous cells.
How Can We Use Bay Leaves?
Use it in the cuisine, but you have to remove them before you serve the food to avoid choking.
In case you’re in a bad mood or you’re stressed, burn 1 or 2 leaves in an aluminum tray at home or in the office. It should be left like that for 10 minutes. Close the windows and make sure the tray isn’t close to anything flammable.
After the period passes, you’ll notice that the smell of the herb has relaxed your muscles as well as your mind, but you can also focus more easily. In the end, throw away the ashes.
