Nowadays, more and more factories have started to stop using manual labor and use machines instead. During the time we’re awake, we spend most of our time being inactive: commuting to or from work, using computers, watching TV, sitting at work etc.
Technology is really developed these days. We can work from home, connect to our friends and do numerous things very fast, but it also has numerous disadvantages.
If you practice sitting for a long period of time, some of the health problems that appear are: obesity, heart diseases, diabetes, poor posture, chronic back pain etc.
These are some of the most common problems which can appear in you in case you’re one of these people:
Shoulder, Neck And Brain Problems
When we include moving every day, we let oxygen and blood flow through our brain and body, so we have a sharp mind which is clear all the time. It means that if we sit for too long, this blood and oxygen flow is decreased, so we can’t think well.
In case you’re a person who works at the computer, your neck is strained all the time. This especially includes the cervical vertebrae that connect the spine with our head. This is a sign of poor posture which can destroy our shoulder and back muscles which we mostly use while we lean over the computer keyboard longer than we should.
Back pain and back problems are also quite common. Poor posture also causes disk damages, inflexible spines etc. Walking and doing exercise help the soft disks located between the vertebrae in our spine to be contracted and expanded. In this way, numerous nutrients and blood are in. If we sit for a longer period of time, we make those disks compact as well as uneven. Collagen will also build up around our ligaments and tendons.
Another health condition which appears in people who sit for a long period is called herniated lumbar disks.
When you sit, some of the muscles you don’t use are the ab muscles. Not using them for a long time can cause the appearance of unnatural overextension that appears in the spine’s natural arch or in other words called, swayback. The complete flexibility is decreased especially in the areas of our back and hips. When we have flexible hips, we have a balanced body. Sitting for a long period of time makes our hip flexor muscles tense and short.
Another problem that appears is with our glute muscles which appear as soft, so our body becomes unstable.
Some of the more serious health problems which can appear are colon cancer, cardiovascular problems and heart problems. Inactivity causes a greater production of insulin which later causes the organs to have a sluggish blood flow. When we move regularly, the cells that cause cancer become filled with boosting antioxidants. They remove the free radicals known to cause cancer and destroy healthy tissues.
When this type of insulin is overproduced, we start gaining weight, that later causes obesity and diabetes to appear.
Leg circulation is also decreased by sitting for a long period of time. The blood becomes gathered around the ankles. It is a reason for the appearance of dangerous blood clots, varicose veins as well as swollen ankles. Our bones also become less dense and very weak. Walking or running can help us have thick and strong bones. This may be the explanation for the appearance of osteoporosis in elderly people.
There was an interesting study that managed to prove that people who tended to watch more TV for 8.5 had a greater risk of some type of a premature death (to be more precise, 61%) than people who only watched TV about 1 hour a day averagely.
What Can We Do To Prevent Being Inactive?
In case your work includes too much sitting and you really can’t do anything about it, don’t lean over the keyboard, don’t slouch and always sit with your back straight! You can also use an exercise ball for sitting to include your ab muscles and make them more active. Your body will be straight naturally in this way. If you don’t think an exercise ball is stable, use a backless stool.
Another thing we should also do is to have a regular stretch. Regularly means about half an hour every day. This means even if you’re working, you should stand up or walk around the area where you work. Your blood flow will be as it should, but also the muscles and brain will function in a great way.
One thing that every expert will recommend is to practice yoga. This helps you relax your mind as well as the body, but it also makes the muscles very flexible. You can also try to use a standing work desk. You’ll be upright and you’ll also have a better oxygen and blood flow in your body which will help you eliminate many health problems such as blood clots.
