With the COVID-19 pandemic currently ravaging the world, this is officially the worst flu season ever. Flu season usually peaks between December and February but the potent coronavirus has extended the season this year. With the death toll rising in Europe by the day, we wish this was a simple case of the flu. Sadly, it’s not.
The flu, on the other hand, has kinda been forgotten at the moment. An ailment that attacks our respiratory system, the flu is much deadlier than we think. Not as potent as COVID-19, of course, but still not an afterthought.
The flu takes thousands of lives every year, especially among the elderly and infants. Around 10% of the US population gets the flu every year – that’s a big number. If you’re one of those unfortunate cases, we’ve got a list of simple remedies below that can help you recover faster.
Flu causes a lot of ingestion that makes you unable to breathe normally. You can loosen up the mucus and phlegm in your lungs with steam therapy. You can use a humidifier, a vaporizer or a steam-filled bathroom to do that. Just inhale the steam and if possible, use a few drops of eucalyptus oil for best results. Deep through your nose and keep those sessions at 5 minutes. Several times per day should be enough.
Staying hydrated is an absolute must when you’re down with the flu. It will keep your respiratory system working at an optimal rate and help you recover quicker. Drink plenty of water to break up the chest congestion and breather easier. Soups, warm teas, and other liquids other than alcohol and sodas can help as well.
Gargling a glass of lukewarm water with a teaspoon of salt should reduce the swelling in your throat and eliminate harmful bacteria that have lodged in it. It will also help reduce the phlegm and mucus in the back of the throat, allowing you to breathe easier.
A powerful natural antibacterial remedy, honey is highly effective in treating upper respiratory infections. Take a tablespoon of it every 3-4 hours when down with the flu to make the symptoms disappear. An obvious plus: it tastes great.
Vitamin C and E Supplements
Both these vitamins can boost your immune system and help it fight the influenza virus. Vitamin C is especially powerful. Notable for its ability to reinforce neutrophils and macrophages, immune system cells on the front defense lines, a vitamin C supplement when you’re down with the flu is a must.
According to experts, we need between 600 and 1,200 mg. of these supplements per day. However, the number varies from person to person, so make sure to consult your doctor.
When you’re down with the flu, there’s a good chance that you’ll cough. A lot. Chronic cough is one of the worst symptoms of the influenza virus and it is one of the toughest as well. The good news is that there are many natural cough suppressants you can get over-the-counter to help relieve the cough.
Many of these contain eucalyptus oil or camphor that will open up your airways and help you breathe better. Some will contain expectorants such as glyceryl guaiacolate that can help break up the chest congestion.
Extra Tip: #StayHome
An important hashtag in the COVID-19 era, staying home is also important if you have the flu. The flu spreads at a speedy rate and you wouldn’t want to infect others, right? Just stay home, stay hydrated, eat a healthy diet, and take vitamin C supplements.
It’ll all be over soon and you’ll be able to continue with your life like nothing happened.
