Every year, a list is published by the EWG (Environmental Working Group) which shows products which are clean e.g. without any pesticides and products which are full of them. They are known as the ‘Clean Fifteen’ and the ‘Dirty Dozen.’
Both of the lists usually contain vegetables and fruits. Luckily for you, today, we’re going to present you some of the most effective ways that can help you clean any product you buy yourself, so you can be sure that it’s free of any chemical!
According to some studies performed at various universities, there is something way stronger than bleach that can eliminate any pesticide of your fruits and vegetables. It’s something that you all probably have at home – baking soda! Of course, no one would recommend using bleach on food, but it’s still used by skilled farmers after they harvest their products. They use it to eliminate bacteria, pesticide residue and different organic matter. Now, these new studies claim that you only need to combine water with baking soda and you’ll be able to eliminate everything harmful from your products!
One particular study used this method to eliminate pesticides from apples. The scientists tested 3 solutions.
The study was done by the University of Massachusetts. The researchers used a combo made of baking soda and water, only water and a solution with Clorox bleach that stayed on the products for 2 minutes.
They proved that only baking soda eliminates everything harmful from the fruits and vegetables and the process is really fast. You need 1.5 liters of water combined with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. You can dip every product inside or you can just leave them in a bowl with this solution. You only need 12 minutes to eliminate dangerous pesticides like thiabendazole and a little bit longer (15 minute) to eliminate another dangerous pesticide called phosmet.
Still, there were cases where some of the pesticides have already got inside the apple. In those cases, the baking soda mixture couldn’t help eliminating them. It was better to peel the apple which isn’t recommended at all because it’s also full of beneficial nutrients that shouldn’t be thrown away.
Baking Powder Or Baking Soda?
These are completely different. Baking powder is something we use to bake things. It contains an acid as well as sodium bicarbonate. Baking soda, on the other hand, is also called sodium bicarbonate which people use to clean things with. You mustn’t confuse them as there might be a dangerous chemical reaction on your fruits and vegetables!
People shouldn’t be worried about pesticide residues according to the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration), but you can’t be too careful when it comes to the health of you and your loved ones. You should be as much careful as you can. Now, with this discovery about baking soda, you’ll have a cheap and available solution that will always help you stay healthier and eliminate any dangerous pesticide of your fruits and vegetables, so make sure you always have it at home!
