Did you know that only 1 to 2% of the world population are natural redheads? How magnificent are is that? Aside from having sparkly ginger hair and cure freckles, redheads have a certain playfulness vibe and exude with courage, independence and a bit of mystique. Red hair is quite uncommon, as we mentioned before, so it’s no wonder that it looks so interesting, especially when it’s natural. Some of the most famous gingers include Jessica Chastain, Ed Sheeran and who can forget about Prince Harry. They have a special place in our heart and we just love them because of that. So what is it that makes redheads so special?
Erin La Rosa recently published a very interesting book on the topic called The Big Redhead Book: Inside the secret society of Red and she has a very interesting theory. She says that natural redheads are actually proud of their enigmatic hair color and they even have some biological advantages over people with other hair colors. There are so many interesting things about gingers that many people call them the “unicorns of humanity”.
Another thing Erin believes is that they have a higher tolerance to pain, that is, they’re more resilient than other people. The red hair color is owed to a mutation in the MC1R gene and this gene is also the one that gives them their resilience. A study conducted by the McGill University back in 2003 revealed that natural redheads (women) have a 25% higher pain tolerance than women with other hair colors.
Another study from the University of Louisville revealed that they’re more immune to anesthesia as well and need 20% higher quantities than other people for general surgery. This also backs up the fact that they’re more resilient and tolerant to pain.
Another interesting fact about redheads is that they’re more sensitive to changes in temperature and can tell better than other people when the season is about to change. They also need less vitamin D thanks to their gene mutation. They are able to produce bigger quantities of this important vitamin faster.
So it’s not just that they look magnificent, nature has found a way to make these people biologically different as well. It seems that it’s really cool to be a redhead and if you’re one of them you need to feel proud.
