A recent study was published by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition connecting people who had lymphoma and leukemia with the intake of aspartame they had every day. The study took 22 years to be completed and included more than 125,000 people. There were previous studies about this matter that were performed on animals and they are consistent.
The first results of the study showed that men had a more increased risk than women. Even one can of diet soda of 12 ounces every day increases the risk of blood plasma cancer (myeloma) and lymphoma.
People in the USA consume from 5000 to 5500 tons of aspartame every year. They mostly intake it through diet soda.
When aspartame is present in liquids it breaks down into phenylalanine, methanol and asparitic acid. As soon as we ingest methanol, it becomes formaldehyde which is known to be carcinogen.
The results from the study also showed that people who drank more diet soda had an increased body mass index. Aspartame also causes the appearance of metabolic syndrome and obesity.
Aspartame certainly has negative effects on our health, so just imagine what it might do to the generations dependent on diet soda when they become older?
Other interesting studies claim that the methanol present in aspartame is connected to neurological diseases because it causes aspartame poisoning. The symptoms it represents can be rather disturbing and include: severe muscle pain, blurred vision, headaches, digestive problems, symptoms who look like the ones present in multiple sclerosis, dizziness and many others. In case a person starts to take smaller amounts of this artificial sweetener, then the symptoms will be decreased. Some researches connected to aspartame show that when a person takes too much of it for a long period of time, it can even be life-threatening.
And it’s not only diet soda which is bad. Regular soda is also bad for consumption. Most non-diet sodas contain high-fructose corn as their primary sweetener which is linked to the appearance of dementia, obesity, heart problems, cancer etc.
Whenever you need to drink something sweet, consider taking some water infused with maple syrup or honey. Another good choice is club soda that only contains bicarbonate of soda and water. In case you want to take caffeine, consider taking black tea, some coffee, yerba mate or matcha. Drinking diet soda regularly can be really bad as we can all see, so why don’t you try and give it up once and for all?
