It’s rich in a number of beneficial nutrients that promote your overall health and heal the body from within. The lemongrass is a herb native to India and has a distinctive lemony flavor and aroma. If you still haven’t added it to your regular diet, here are a few reasons that may convince you to start consuming it on an everyday basis.
Lemongrass Health Benefits
Boosts Your Immunity
Lemongrass is rich in a number of phytonutrients and antioxidants which can improve your body’s natural defense mechanisms and strengthen your immunity. It can also help your body fight off the harmful free radicals and delay their effects. In addition to this, lemongrass can help you keep your healthy cells safe and reduce damage to irritated tissue. Two of the antioxidants it contains, nerol and geranial, prevent the proliferation of bad cells and help your body flush out the damaged cells.
Improves Your Heart Health
Lemongrass contains citral which helps your blood vessels relax, it lowers your cholesterol levels naturally and the high content of antioxidants prevent fat oxidation in your arteries. All of these combined help keep your heart healthy.
Protects Your Stomach and Improves Digestion
Our stomach has a protective lining which prevents the acidic gastric juices from damaging the interior of the stomach. When we consume certain medications or alcohol they cause damage to this lining which can lead to a number of digestive problems. Lemongrass essential oil can protect your stomach’s lining which is why you need to add it to your routine.
Promotes Better Sleep Quality
Some studies have shown that lemongrass can significantly improve your sleep quality and extend its duration, so if you have sleeping problems you should consume it.
A Great Insect Repellent
In addition to promoting your overall health, lemongrass repels insects so when you’re outside in the summer make sure to spray some lemongrass essential oil on your arms and legs. It will repel the mosquitos and other insects and you’ll be able to enjoy the outdoors without worrying about itching.
How to Grow Lemongrass at Home?
Buy a lemongrass stalk and peel off the outer layers which have dried out. Take a glass jar and fill it with water (2 inches) and place the lemongrass stalks in it. Make sure their base is in the water. Put the jar in a sunny spot and change the water every day. In about 3-4 weeks you should be able to spot the roots sprouting and once they grow 2 inches you can plant them.
Put some quality soil and transfer the lemongrass. Hydrate it regularly but don’t put too much water. You can start harvesting the herb in about 4 months and you can use them fresh or dried, for tea and cooking.
